Sheena BarnesTell us about your background. What are the experiences, including education, that make up the person you currently are?

Informed Trauma Care Specialist and parent in Toledo Public Schools.

What was your trigger moment and why this specific office?

Seeing the impact exposure of gun violence had on my son’s educational career. Education is the backbone of our community.

What made you feel qualified to run for office?

My experience as an organizer and my community relationships.

Do you work full-time or part-time?

Full-time.

Most people don’t know what their elected official does on a daily basis. What’s a typical day looking like for you?

Learning policies and procedures to become a better advocate for public education.

What do you think people would be surprised to know someone in your position does?

I would say gaining knowledge of bigger systemic causes in the way public education functions and the ongoing challenges.

What are 3-5 skills needed to be successful in the elected office you served in/are currently serving in?

Willing to learn more (open-minded), passionate, communication skills, and having a strong community connection.

What’s the best part about serving in elected office?

Knowing you are advocating for our future leaders and making a positive impact on the community.

What has been the accomplishment you’re most proud of while in office?

Passing inclusive and equity resolutions for our district.

In terms of finances, how much money did you have to raise for your campaign?

$10,000-15,000 but with support for friends maybe less.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who’s thinking about running for the position you serve/have served in their community?
