Money is a critical resource needed to run for office. But it’s hard to grow the funds you need when you don’t come from a wealthy family, have the resources to self-fund campaigns, or even have the type of career or professional network where co-workers and contacts are primed to be be donors.

Because money can be the most intimidating and anxiety-inducing component of considering a run for office, this is one of the most cited reasons why women are hesitant to pursue elected leadership. Women of color in politics have also noted the challenges they’ve faced with building a fundraising base, compared to their white peers.
